I’ve been on a purple kick lately and have been wanting to try a purple mascara because I read in a beauty magazine that purple mascara is supposed to make brown eyes pop and who doesn’t want their eyes to pop right? I stopped by Walmart while running errands and found myself in the cosmetics aisle. I picked up Hard Candy’s 1000 Lashes purple mascara in the color “Divine Purple”. The purple was not very noticable, you can’t really see the pigmentation, so I my regular black mascara over it and to my surprise, it worked better as an fiber eyelash primer! The combo made my lashes look longer than they’ve ever looked before, woohoo!
I also found some Wet’n’Wild purple liquid eyeliner that wasn’t too expensive so I gave it a try too. The color was very subtle since it’s dark but in certain lighting, the purple makes my eyes look kind of red as if I had just finished crying or something, maybe it would look better on a different complexion or with a eye color. I’m still undecided on how I feel about it.
Oversized Jackets: A Fall / Winter Layering Essential
I was going through my closet and found this little gem, it’s always been a little big for me so I haven’t worn it much but since 90’s is making a comeback & oversized jackets are a great layering essential for fall/winter so I decided to bust it out….plus the blue complemented my purple makeup 🙂
It’s almost Halloween and you don’t have a costume yet?!? Eek, well don’t fret, I’ve got some quick, easy, and cute Halloween costume ideas for you. Halloween costumes can be pricey especially for something you’re probably only ever going to wear once or twice in your life. You can’t really reuse your storebought costume as regular clothes; the quality of most costumes just doesn’t really even compare to that of actual clothes.
DIY halloween costumes are a great option for those looking to get creative, have a one-of-a-kind costume, as well as save some money. The best way to reduce costume costs is by getting smaller pieces and/or accessories to finish off your look and the best part, you probably already have a majority of these core pieces within your closet! Yay, resourcefulness!
Another added perk of DIY (a.k.a. “do-it-yourself”) costumes is that you won’t run the risk of running into someone wearing your same exact costume, eek!
5 Cute and Easy Halloween Costume Ideas
Below are 5 last minute Halloween costume ideas that I came up with this past weekend using mostly things I already had in my closet.
All you really need is a Striped shirt, Red neck scarf, and white gloves. Grab a black eyeliner and some makeup and get creative with your mime look; maybe draw some hearts, a teardrop, or some diamond shapes under your eyes, on your cheeks, lips, etc.
2) Parisian Girl
Striped shirt, neck scarf, beret & bam, 2nd costume idea using the same core pieces as costume idea #1, mime.
Wear all black (or whatever color cat you want to be), draw some whiskers on your face, and get some cat ears or make your own car ear headband. Instant Cat, Meow!
Flannel, beanie, and some tan boots and you’ve got yet another costume, Lumberjack! You can find cheap costume accessories at Target or the dollar store, i.e. toy axe, a fake beard, or suspenders to complete your lumberjack look. You can probably find a some wood and use those as well!
Wear all red and get some devil horns and you’ve got yourself a devil of a Halloween costume! Lol! You can really enhance the costume with a lot of red fire-y makeup, maybe red and gold eyeshadow with some gold shimmer or glitter. Plus it’ll give you a reason to wear red lipstick! I love red lipstick but don’t wear it often because I’m used to my pinks and neutrals.
I’ve been so busy I haven’t really had a chance to think about Halloween costumes so when I was invited to a Halloween / costume bar crawl, I had to come up with something quick. Going from store to store looking for costumes can be a little stressful especially if you have limited time before an event and don’t want to spend a ton of money so I opted to go with a DIY costume using things I already owned.
I was thinking about wearing a striped shirt, red neck scarf, and a beret and just being a Parisian girl but when I put the outfit on, I looked more like a mime so I just went with it. Plus, I got to wear red lipstick which I don’t often get a chance to wear so BONUS!
Another reason that I liked the Mime costume was that I already had all the makeup ingredients to complete the look, eyeliner and red lipstick(or any color you want).
For the face art, you can definitely get creative and draw various things on your face such as diamond shapes over your eyes, heart shapes or circles on your cheeks, etc. I had limited time so I didn’t want to run the risk of messing up and having to start over, so I went with a simple tear drop for my face art.
For the lips, I opted for a tiny cartoon-like lip.
I’m a sucker for monochrome and bold color combos so the black, white, and red color scheme certainly fit the bill. I wore black and white striped sweater with some shoulder embellishments and a pair of black knee-slit skinny jeans.
When I think of mimes, I think of funky non-traditional hats so I opted for a black velvet top hat which was recycled from a few Halloweens costumes ago. A red neckscarf is another iconic mime accessory. You can also add some black suspenders to really take your mime costume to the next level. Oh and of course, a pair of white gloves!
Have you ever watched a talk show and wondered what it’s like to be in the audience of one of these shows? I have. So I decided, “what the heck? let’s give it a try” so I signed up to be in the audience for the talk show, The Real.
I love empowered outspoken girl bosses so it was only natural that I chose to go to The Real. I love that the show features a diverse group of successful women who aren’t afraid to voice their opinions. Also one of the hosts is an Asian American woman, Jeannie Mai. There weren’t and still aren’t that many asians or asian females represented within the mainstream media so its really cool to see one standing the test of time and evolving with each project she takes on. So rad and inspiring! Also, Jeanie used to host the show “How Do I Look?”, a wardrobe and makeover show, that I watched religiously.
Once you submit your request to be an audience member, you get an email from the show’s staff confirming the location, date, and arrival time. Once confirmed, you pretty much just show up on the day of taping. The show’s staff have the whole process streamlined really well so you just go from one step/area to the next. You’re taking part in their process so you’ll need to be able to just go with the flow and honestly, it was kind of fun not knowing what was next, it’s like a surprise every time.
Once you arrive at the meeting place/audience holding area, you go through security and check-in. There is a backdrop with some props where audience members can take pictures. Here’s a group photo of me, my mom, and my friend.
Here’s an OOTD shot. It was a hot day and I figured the studio would have some AC running so I decided pair my cami with a light moto jacket that I paired with black skinnies and some croc embossed oxfords.
After about 30 minutes or so of waiting, taking pictures, and chatting, we walked over to the studio. I recently went to Universal Studios and went on the studio tour so it was pretty neat to be walking around down there amongst all the hustle and bustle of television and filming activities.
Once we all were seated, we were given the safety rundown by the studio’s firefighter.
Studio firefighter giving the audience the safety rundown
We were seated in the front row right behind the cameras so that was pretty cool. All the hosts had to look in that direction so it was like they were all talking to me lol
The show had a “hype” woman who’s job it was to keep us all amped and engaged. There were some male audience members so she had them dance for their significant other for prizes which was pretty funny especially when Ginuwine’s Pony came on in the studio.
Also, there’s a big “Applause” sign towards the front of the stage and you pretty much have to clap every time it lights up as well as before and after breaks. Make sure you pay attention because you don’t want to be that ONE person who’s filmed not clapping and ruin the shot, oops!
I had attended a game show in the past with a group of friends and they had us check in our phones before entering the studio so we weren’t able to get any pictures inside the studio. I love that The Real encouraged us to take pictures. I was even able to get a shot of me on stage with the mic, woohoo! Watch out world, Cat Eyes and Candy takes daytime? I wish! lol
The Audience Experience
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. There’s just something unique about watching a show on TV then witnessing it all happen live and seeing what happens behind the scenes. Unless you’re used to being on set and in a studio, you’re probably going to feel a little out of your element but don’t fret because the unknown can also add to the fun and excitement of it all.
If you’ve never gone to a taping of a show, I would recommend trying it at least once; it’s such a unique experience. Plus, you get to see yourself on TV later! “Look ma, I’m on TV!”
Success was always defined as following a certain path; graduate from high school, go to college, get a degree, get a job, climb the corporate ladder, make more money, etc. the list goes on and on. It’s engrained in everything we do and see, televisions shows depict upper middle class families making over 6 figures, advertisements and social media tell you what you should look like, how you should dress, what you should eat, which curling iron or makeup product to buy, etc. Not to mention your family/parent’s definition of success for you. It’s kind of crazy how we often unquestioningly allow all of these things to influence us and help shape our ideas of success. What does success truly look like to you? What happens if your ideas around the topic of success changes? Is what you are doing putting you on a path to move closer toward your definition of success?
After a decade of working in the corporate world, I’ve taken a leap into entrepreneurship. EEK! It’s super exciting but also very scary. If you had asked me a year ago what my career was going to look like, I probably would’ve said something in the professional corporate world…basically continuing on the path that I had been on during most of my adult working life. Change and the unknown are scary things for a lot of people and entrepreneurship does not have that same type of stability as traditional corporate jobs but hey, the greater the risk, the greater the reward right?? Eek. Again, scary but also super exciting!
If you are contemplating entrepreneurship, one of the biggest obstacles in your mind is probably the financial aspect of it. If so, I’d recommend you go through the exercise of figuring out your current daily net, then determine what your daily net would be if you lived below your means (yes, cut out all the extra stuff you don’t actually need), this will give you an idea of how much money you will need to generate on a daily basis so that your daily net is net positive or at least net zero. Pursuing new endeavors doesn’t necessarily mean that the new endeavor will be your only source of income; you can pursue those new endeavors and still utilize your existing background and experience or even take on completely unrelated jobs with low entrance barriers as a means to generate income.
Think outside the box, try something different, get creative; who knows what you will be capable of? It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. When you find something that you are passionate about and know what you want to do or what you need to do, you will do whatever it takes to make it work. Hustle harder, I’m rooting for you!
I’ve always had a passion for fashion and a love for handbags so I’ll be Girl Bossin’ (or at least trying to) in those realms. I have a lot of ideas and I am super excited about working to turn those ideas into reality so I can share them with you. It’s still in the early stages and I have a lot of work to do so more information to come! Also, I’m excited to tap into my creative side and will be working on making enhancements to Cat Eyes and Candy.

So there was a lot of buzz about Anza-Borrego in the media due to the Super Bloom, I had never been before so I just had to go check it out and I’m glad I did! There was a lot of unique and beautiful scenery, I mean how often do you see normally desert areas covered with green plants and colorful flowers? It was surreal!
What is the Super Bloom?
A super bloom is a term used to describe an explosion of wildflowers that exceeds the typical spring blooms. Annuals (flowers) are often short-lived due to the harsh desert conditions, so the seeds lie dormant and only sprout when water washes the protective coating away from their seeds. Since Southern California has gotten so much rain this winter, the super bloom is expected to be the best it’s been in over a decade!
Honestly, the drive there was one of the best parts. It was neat to see normally rocky or sandy areas covered with green plants, it was like the land before time or something. There were a lot of neat areas along the way with desert plants that look like underwater coral, giant boulders, and plenty of flowers.
The “Super Bloom”
With all the hype, I thought I was going to see a sea of bright colorful flowers but the truth is a lot of the flowers were really spread out so you had to really look for areas where the flowers were more concentrated if you were looking forward to getting that great super bloom selfie that you’ve been seeing all over the web. There was a lot of bare patches of dried mud amongst the flowers but if you got the picture from a certain angle, it just looks like you are in a sea of flowers and it looks almost unreal. There were a lot of yellow and orange flowers when we went, we were hoping to see other colored flowers like purple and red but I was told that the flowers all bloom at different time so it’s possible that the other colors hadn’t bloomed yet.
Road Trip Fun
I love road trips; nothing beats exploring new places, checking out new scenery, and listing to good music and having great conversations! All in all, I had a really great time, it was relatively close (~2 hour drive), I got some fun pictures out of it, I got to road trip with my honey, and felt like I was in a scene from the Land Before Time during certain parts of the drive, what’s not to love?!
If you are in Nashville and are looking for some photo opportunities, be sure to check out the murals around town. I love it when towns have murals because the murals give you a glimpse into each neighborhood’s essence. During a trip to TN I was able to get a couple of shots with the “I Believe in Nashville” mural and the turquoise and white striped wall by Draper James which is directly across from the “I Believe in Nashville” mural. Please note that there are multiple locations for the “I Believe in Nashville” mural so if you are trying to go to a specific one, be sure to look up the address beforehand.
A trip to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without the obligatory photo in front of the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.
Of course I had to get a few shots by the Draper James striped wall.
I’m a sucker for jumping shots so I had to get one in during my Nashville trip. 😉
A candid of me and bae 🙂
One of the things I always do before picking my outfit for a certain day or event is checking the weather beforehand. I want to feel comfortable in whatever I wear and that is hard to do when you aren’t dressed for the weather and are freezing because it is too cold or sweaty because it is too hot. The weather was sunny with some clouds so I decided to go with a cami that would look good alone or paired with a jacket. I decided on the velvet moto jacket because it was lightweight and I could easily stuff it in a purse or tie it around my waist. I paired the cami moto jacket combo with some back knee slit skinnies and a small black crossbody bag.
I fell in love with this embellished beanie as soon as I put it on. To be honest, I had my doubts when I first saw it hanging amongst the other winter hats adorned with it’s giant pearl and gold toned balls but I had never seen anything like it before so I knew I just had to try it on and I am glad I did because I love it! A stylish beanie, who knew?!?
Beanies are a great way to tame your hair and stay stylish on windy days…or days when you just don’t feel like doing your hair.
It was especially windy when I went to the Nashville Parthenon. Do these images look familiar? It’s probably because you’ve seen it before! It is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece.
Beanies aren’t just for the fellas’ anymore; ladies, you can rock them too! Beanies aren’t just for winter either, they are great all year round! There are so many styles of beanies, thick ones, thin one, in addition to countless colors, patterns, decorations, and embellishments; there is a beanie for everyone no matter the season or what your style is or what type of vibe you are trying to achieve with your look.
Not sure where to start on your search for the perfect windy day hair solution? Well, I did all the hard work for you. I recently did a post of my top 7 winter hats (READ HERE) where you can find some cute and stylish beanies for any season or if you simply want to cut to the chase & get your own then click SHOP HATS NOW
Living in San Diego, we miss out on all the fun things that come along with seasonal changes like transitioning to winter clothing. I may not need heavy coats or gloves in San Diego but I can definitely do some hats and beanies for winter! Make sure you pick a style that you feel comfortable in because hats are eyecatching! Be sure to strut your stuff and rock that hat!
I am feeling hats and beanies at the moment and am excited to share my top 7 favorite winter hat styles! I am also looking forward to styling some outfits and looks with some of these hats 🙂
