Super Bloom: A Sea of Yellow Flowers

So there was a lot of buzz about Anza-Borrego in the media due to the Super Bloom, I had never been before so I just had to go check it out and I’m glad I did!  There was a lot of unique and beautiful scenery, I mean how often do you see normally desert areas covered with green plants and colorful flowers?  It was surreal!

What is the Super Bloom?

A super bloom is a term used to describe an explosion of wildflowers that exceeds the typical spring blooms.  Annuals (flowers) are often short-lived due to the harsh desert conditions, so the seeds lie dormant and only sprout when water washes the protective coating away from their seeds.  Since Southern California has gotten so much rain this winter, the super bloom is expected to be the best it’s been in over a decade!

The Drive

Honestly, the drive there was one of the best parts.  It was neat to see normally rocky or sandy areas covered with green plants, it was like the land before time or something.  There were a lot of neat areas along the way with desert plants that look like underwater coral, giant boulders, and plenty of flowers.

The “Super Bloom”

With all the hype, I thought I was going to see a sea of bright colorful flowers but the truth is a lot of the flowers were really spread out so you had to really look for areas where the flowers were more concentrated if you were looking forward to getting that great super bloom selfie that you’ve been seeing all over the web.  There was a lot of bare patches of dried mud amongst the flowers but if you got the picture from a certain angle, it just looks like you are in a sea of flowers and it looks almost unreal.  There were a lot of yellow and orange flowers when we went, we were hoping to see other colored flowers like purple and red but I was told that the flowers all bloom at different time so it’s possible that the other colors hadn’t bloomed yet.

Road Trip Fun

I love road trips; nothing beats exploring new places, checking out new scenery, and listing to good music and having great conversations!  All in all, I had a really great time, it was relatively close (~2 hour drive), I got some fun pictures out of it, I got to road trip with my honey, and felt like I was in a scene from the Land Before Time during certain parts of the drive, what’s not to love?!

Nashville Murals

Nashville, TN

If you are in Nashville and are looking for some photo opportunities, be sure to check out the murals around town.  I love it when towns have murals because the murals give you a glimpse into each neighborhood’s essence.  During a trip to TN I was able to get a couple of shots with the  “I Believe in Nashville” mural and the turquoise and white striped wall by Draper James which is directly across from the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.  Please note that there are multiple locations for the “I Believe in Nashville” mural so if you are trying to go to a specific one, be sure to look up the address beforehand.

A trip to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without the obligatory photo in front of the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.

Of course I had to get a few shots by the Draper James striped wall.

I’m a sucker for jumping shots so I had to get one in during my Nashville trip.  😉

A candid of me and bae 🙂

The Outfit

One of the things I always do before picking my outfit for a certain day or event is checking the weather beforehand.  I want to feel comfortable in whatever I wear and that is hard to do when you aren’t dressed for the weather and are freezing because it is too cold or sweaty because it is too hot.  The weather was sunny with some clouds so I decided to go with a cami that would look good alone or paired with a jacket.  I decided on the velvet moto jacket because it was lightweight and I could easily stuff it in a purse or tie it around my waist.  I paired the cami moto jacket combo with some back knee slit skinnies and a small black crossbody bag.

Stylish Beanies, A Windy Day Hair Solution

nashville parthenon steps

I fell in love with this embellished beanie as soon as I put it on.  To be honest, I had my doubts when I first saw it hanging amongst the other winter hats adorned with it’s giant pearl and gold toned balls but I had never seen anything like it before so I knew I just had to try it on and I am glad I did because I love it!  A stylish beanie, who knew?!?

Beanies are a great way to tame your hair and stay stylish on windy days…or days when you just don’t feel like doing your hair.

It was especially windy when I went to the Nashville Parthenon.  Do these images look familiar?  It’s probably because you’ve seen it before!  It is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

Salvation Mountain Roadtrip

I’ve always seen pictures of Salvation Mountain and just assumed that it was going to be really far from me but it’s actually just a few hours away!  About an hour away from Palm Springs & totally driveable!  The drive is actually kind of serene and tranquil especially if you are driving on an off day.  I love passing through the windmills and the Salton Sea, the views are breathtaking.

I knew that Salvation Mountain would be very bright and colorful so I wanted to wear something contrasting so I would pop a bit more in the pictures.  I decided to go with a long dark grey maxi dress with black floral print.  I paired the dress with a pair of black moto boots, a black wide rimmed hat, blue/green mirrored sunglasses, and my absolute favorite python embossed handbag.  There’s just something about dark maxi’s for fall that remind me of a fall harvest so it seemed appropriate, lol.

Moto Boots and a Girly Dress

3

6

Dresses are just so girly, so sometimes I feel the need to balance the girly-ness with contrasting dark edgy pieces; it also adds a bit of mystery and sass to any outfit.  How cute is this casual floral dress?  I love the layered flared sleeves that sway in the wind and make you feel all dainty!  To be honest, I was going to go the traditional route and pair this casual girly floral dress with some cute tan ankle boots for causal cali boho-y western vibe, but my friend suggested that I pair it with a leather jacket.  I was hesitant and sceptical at first because it didn’t look right when I visualized it in my head but when I tried it on and added these black moto boots, I loved it!  I mean what says edgy more than moto boots?  Am I right?  Motorcycle or “Moto” boots for short are just so bad (the good kind of bad) & I love it!

Don’t be afraid to mix it up and experiment by pairing seemingly opposite or mismatched pieces to create your own unique look that helps describe who you are and your unique style.

Top Boots for Fall

Stylish and Affordable Fall Boots

When one thinks of fall, one thinks “sweater season.” The boot is just as essential as the sweater is to your fall fashion wardrobe.  Living in SoCal, it never gets cold enough to wear knee high boots so I tend to go towards the ankle boots.  Maybe you live in the colder areas that actually have seasons and want a pair of knee high boots, there are boots to fit every type of style you’re rockin’ or any weather conditions you live in.  I love how easily boots can transition from season to season; especially if you get a beautiful brown boot that ages to perfection! Rock those bad boys during festival season in the spring and rock those same babies when fall comes around.

I love cute boots but it seems like I can never find any cute ones that don’t cost hundreds of dollars.  So I scoured the interwebs and found these cute, stylish, and, best of all, affordable boots for your viewing (& shopping) pleasure, enjoy!

Ways to Cut Costs on Cute Fall Boots

One of the easiest ways to cut costs and still get cute stylish boots is to go to retailers or websites that sell past season items at significantly marked down-prices.  A couple of examples of these types of stores are Marshall’s, TJ Maxx, Ross, etc.  Another option is outlet malls which also carry past season marked down items.

Because the items at these stores are usually from a few seasons ago, you should try to avoid items that were so overly trendy at the time that now they’re obviously past season.  The best way to avoid this budget shopping pitfall is to pick more timeless and classic pieces.  This can include the color (hot neon colors were really big 3 or 4 years ago, if you wore that today and weren’t at a rave, you’d just look ridiculously outdated :X Sorry!!), prints, design elements /embellishments, frills (think fringe, beaded fringe, ruffles, etc.), a particular cut or style (gaucho pants, cargo shorts, pucca shell necklaces…you get the point).  To avoid this, stick to neutral colors such as black, white, navy, brown, grey, and splashes of color like red, royal blue, bold yellow, etc. to add some color in your life.

Another way to cut costs on cute fall boots is to get faux leather or faux suede boots which gives the appearance of real leather or real suede except at a fraction of the price.  Another added benefit of the faux leather and faux suede options are that they are animal friendly!

There are boots for every fashionista at any budget!

Kenzo H&M Review: Top Picks & Prices

I was really excited when I first found out about the H&M collaboration with Kenzo late last year.  I mean, who doesn’t love big brands at affordable prices?  The full collection consists of 95 individual pieces: outerwear, dresses, tops, bottoms (shirts, jeans, pj bottoms), some footwear (fuzzy tiger striped sandals and rubber galoshes), and accessories (hats, gloves, sunglasses, socks, etc).

jungle-longsleeve-model

Honestly, I was hoping that the collection would be a lot more “wearable”.  Most of the piece are pretty “out there,” very eccentric…there’s a lot of prints, bold colors, and ruffles.  I’m all about animal prints & flare but the combination of tiger print and bright bold colors is just a bit much all at once.  Also, I was quite surprise by the price-point on some of these items, many were over $99!  Have you been to H&M lately?  Almost everything at H&M  is under $50, and that’s the nice stuff, so I was really hoping that the pricing would be more on par with H&M’s normal prices but, obviously, with a little bit of a Kenzo premium markup.  At these prices, you probably won’t find me lining up outside my local H&M store on November 3rd but I’m certainly not above checking out the clearance racks a few months from now.  There are several pieces that I like but I don’t know that I’d go as far to say I love any of the pieces :X  Sorry, not sorry!

Nassau Bahamas Vacation Getaway

So everyone is going on their summer vacations and I’m over here like, 3 more days of work until the weekend comes.  I love vacationing during non-peak seasons/months, it’s not as busy and I don’t have to deal with huge crowds, long wait times, or high hotel rates…what’s there not to love?  Oh yeah, the vacation FOMO you get when everyone is traveling and having fun on their summer vacations and you’re stuck at work.  If I can’t be on vacation, I can at least reminisce!  I have a bunch of vacation pictures that I haven’t posted from a few vacations so I’ve decided that I’m going to do a couple of posts on them 🙂

Here are some shots from my short trip to Nassau during my Bahamas birthday cruise several months ago.Nassau Bahamas

The blue waters and cute lighthouse reminds me of a postcard you’d get from your vacationing friend.  When I think of Nassau, this image always comes to mind.  If you’re ever in Nassau, you can find this spot by walking past Senior Frog’s towards the beach just beyond all the restaurants and buildings and before the brightly colored stands on the beach.

1_0851How often do you see bright crayon-colored buildings when you’re out and about?  Not often enough, I bet.  I love fun, festive things with lots of character!
1_0800You can’t go to a white sand beach and not write in the sand so here’s my obligatory sand drawing, sorry for the cheesiness!
Black Romper in NassauI love wearing rompers as opposed to swim cover-ups when I’m out at the beach.  Swim cover-ups often have a undergarment-y feel to them; most of the time they aren’t a stand alone piece and are sheer!  Rompers are extremely versatile, you can slip it off and hit the beach, then slip it back on and grab lunch or hit up some stores without looking like a tourist in your wet sheer swim cover-up at the souvenir shop.Clubmaster Sunnies in Nassau1_0728a1_0930

If you’re feeling stressed out or overwhelmed at work, you should definitely take a vacation.  Even if you can’t take the vacation right away, just the act of planning it and having that getaway to look forward to will put you in a slightly more positive mood.  Let’s face it, how can be made if you’re going to be going on vacation soon?

Cute and Cheap Sunglasses

1_0851
I love wearing sunglasses! If you follow me on Instagram ( @cateyesandcandy ) then you’ll know that this is true because most of my pictures feature a pair of sunglasses in them. Living in Southern California where the sun is out nearly all year round, sunglasses are an absolute must! Sunglasses are great because they help protect your eyes and double as the perfect accessory to top off any look, heyyyyyyyyyyy. I went to Nordstrom over the weekend and was surprised at how ridiculously expensive some sunglasses are, like $500 ridiculous! You know what I’m talking about, those Celine sunglasses, those Tom Ford sunglasses, those Fendi sunglasses, the list of luxury sunglass brands goes on and on but the cash supply in our wallets don’t; do you feel me?!? Sunglass trends come and go so quickly, the thought of spending $400-$500 on a pair of sunglasses just makes me want to cringe!

That’s where the “throwaways” come in. “Throwaways” are my nickname for cheap or affordable sunglasses that I don’t mind losing. I don’t mind spending more on quality products especially on classic styles that will last for years to come but sometime’s a girl (or guy) just need a pair of cute and stylish and most importantly cheap sunglasses that they can bring with them to the next pool party or festival and not get too heart-broken when they get broken or misplaced. The key to being a fashionista on a budget is spending less on something that looks like it costs a lot more than it actually does. Cheap (in price) doesn’t necessarily have to mean “cheap looking”. Trendy and affordable stores like Forever21, H&M, or Zara always have affordable dupes of trendy sunglasses from luxury designer brands. And if you can’t find what you want there, then there’s always the Cat Eyes & Candy online store 😉
