Super Bloom: A Sea of Yellow Flowers

So there was a lot of buzz about Anza-Borrego in the media due to the Super Bloom, I had never been before so I just had to go check it out and I’m glad I did!  There was a lot of unique and beautiful scenery, I mean how often do you see normally desert areas covered with green plants and colorful flowers?  It was surreal!

What is the Super Bloom?

A super bloom is a term used to describe an explosion of wildflowers that exceeds the typical spring blooms.  Annuals (flowers) are often short-lived due to the harsh desert conditions, so the seeds lie dormant and only sprout when water washes the protective coating away from their seeds.  Since Southern California has gotten so much rain this winter, the super bloom is expected to be the best it’s been in over a decade!

The Drive

Honestly, the drive there was one of the best parts.  It was neat to see normally rocky or sandy areas covered with green plants, it was like the land before time or something.  There were a lot of neat areas along the way with desert plants that look like underwater coral, giant boulders, and plenty of flowers.

The “Super Bloom”

With all the hype, I thought I was going to see a sea of bright colorful flowers but the truth is a lot of the flowers were really spread out so you had to really look for areas where the flowers were more concentrated if you were looking forward to getting that great super bloom selfie that you’ve been seeing all over the web.  There was a lot of bare patches of dried mud amongst the flowers but if you got the picture from a certain angle, it just looks like you are in a sea of flowers and it looks almost unreal.  There were a lot of yellow and orange flowers when we went, we were hoping to see other colored flowers like purple and red but I was told that the flowers all bloom at different time so it’s possible that the other colors hadn’t bloomed yet.

Road Trip Fun

I love road trips; nothing beats exploring new places, checking out new scenery, and listing to good music and having great conversations!  All in all, I had a really great time, it was relatively close (~2 hour drive), I got some fun pictures out of it, I got to road trip with my honey, and felt like I was in a scene from the Land Before Time during certain parts of the drive, what’s not to love?!

Nashville Murals

Nashville, TN

If you are in Nashville and are looking for some photo opportunities, be sure to check out the murals around town.  I love it when towns have murals because the murals give you a glimpse into each neighborhood’s essence.  During a trip to TN I was able to get a couple of shots with the  “I Believe in Nashville” mural and the turquoise and white striped wall by Draper James which is directly across from the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.  Please note that there are multiple locations for the “I Believe in Nashville” mural so if you are trying to go to a specific one, be sure to look up the address beforehand.

A trip to Nashville wouldn’t be complete without the obligatory photo in front of the “I Believe in Nashville” mural.

Of course I had to get a few shots by the Draper James striped wall.

I’m a sucker for jumping shots so I had to get one in during my Nashville trip.  😉

A candid of me and bae 🙂

The Outfit

One of the things I always do before picking my outfit for a certain day or event is checking the weather beforehand.  I want to feel comfortable in whatever I wear and that is hard to do when you aren’t dressed for the weather and are freezing because it is too cold or sweaty because it is too hot.  The weather was sunny with some clouds so I decided to go with a cami that would look good alone or paired with a jacket.  I decided on the velvet moto jacket because it was lightweight and I could easily stuff it in a purse or tie it around my waist.  I paired the cami moto jacket combo with some back knee slit skinnies and a small black crossbody bag.

Stylish Beanies, A Windy Day Hair Solution

nashville parthenon steps

I fell in love with this embellished beanie as soon as I put it on.  To be honest, I had my doubts when I first saw it hanging amongst the other winter hats adorned with it’s giant pearl and gold toned balls but I had never seen anything like it before so I knew I just had to try it on and I am glad I did because I love it!  A stylish beanie, who knew?!?

Beanies are a great way to tame your hair and stay stylish on windy days…or days when you just don’t feel like doing your hair.

It was especially windy when I went to the Nashville Parthenon.  Do these images look familiar?  It’s probably because you’ve seen it before!  It is a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon in Athens, Greece.

Beanies aren’t just for the fellas’ anymore; ladies, you can rock them too!  Beanies aren’t just for winter either, they are great all year round!  There are so many styles of beanies, thick ones, thin one, in addition to countless colors, patterns, decorations, and embellishments; there is a beanie for everyone no matter the season or what your style is or what type of vibe you are trying to achieve with your look.

Salvation Mountain Roadtrip

I’ve always seen pictures of Salvation Mountain and just assumed that it was going to be really far from me but it’s actually just a few hours away!  About an hour away from Palm Springs & totally driveable!  The drive is actually kind of serene and tranquil especially if you are driving on an off day.  I love passing through the windmills and the Salton Sea, the views are breathtaking.

I knew that Salvation Mountain would be very bright and colorful so I wanted to wear something contrasting so I would pop a bit more in the pictures.  I decided to go with a long dark grey maxi dress with black floral print.  I paired the dress with a pair of black moto boots, a black wide rimmed hat, blue/green mirrored sunglasses, and my absolute favorite python embossed handbag.  There’s just something about dark maxi’s for fall that remind me of a fall harvest so it seemed appropriate, lol.

Universal Studios – Best Time to Go

Universal goin’ up on a Tuesday

Last week, I made a trip to Universal Studios to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday which happened to land on a Tuesday.  I checked the weather in LA the day before and the forecast called for rain in the morning; having already requested my time off from work, we decided to move forward with the day trip and I’m so glad we did because everything worked out great!  It was cloudy and gloomy in the morning but no rain.  The clouds seemed to have gone away within an hour of being there and the weather was perfect, not too hot, not too cold, with just a light breeze; perfect for walking around all day at an amusement park.

The forecast of potential rain and the fact that it was a random day of the week seemed to have scared away a lot of the usual amusement park crowd.  The lines mostly consisted of however long it would take you to walk through the line and not much more.  We didn’t have to wait more than 15 minutes for any of the rides…the way amusement parks should be!

Universal Studios vs Disneyland

I love Universal Studios and would choose it over Disneyland any day (no offense Disney Fans).  The food at Universal Studios is way better (taste, quality, and variety) and less expensive than Disneyland.   They had a fried chicken spot that sold chicken and waffle sandwiches!  That’s pretty fancy for an amusement park fast food spot!  The wait times for rides are way shorter.  Alcohol is allowed throughout Universal Studios Hollywood and there are bars everywhere!  Plus, you aren’t confined to certain alcohol-drinking only areas of the park.  Disneyland does not sell alcohol except at the super exclusive Club 33 and California Adventures.  Every aspect of Universal Studios is way more themed out than Disneyland, even down to the waiting areas for rides.  As you walk through the line to the “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey” ride, you walk through a replica of the classrooms and corridors of Hogwarts, the portraits talk and move, and there’s even a hologram of Potter and the gang!

I finally got to try some frozen butter beer!  It was very tasty and very sweet.  Best way to describe it would be a butterscotch eggnog slushie.  Sip with caution as brainfreeze may occur 😉

Springfield was AWESOME!  All Simpsons, All the Time.  As you walked through Springfield, you can spot iconic Simpsons sites such as the Kwik-E-Mart and Moe’s Tavern.  They even sold Duff beer and had the Simpsons playing on TV, it was so nostalgic and really made you feel like a kid again.

Best Time to Go

I had a great time at Universal Studios Hollywood and can’t wait to go back again on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.  Mondays and Fridays, although still during the workweek would still be busier since people are more likely to request those days off to extend their weekend as opposed to a random day during the week.  Oh and if you check the weather forecast and there are very low chances of rain, try to go on those dates because the threat of rain will deter even more people from going to the park which would result in faster wait times and less crowds, all pluses in my book!

Salton Sea – CA Desert

I’ve seen amazing pictures of the Salton Sea but have never personally been so I was super stoked when I found out it was conveniently located just a short drive east between San Diego and Palm Springs.  Needless to say, I had to make stop at the Salton Sea on my way home from my recent Palm Springs trip.  We went on a Monday and it was an absolute ghost town with the exception of the park ranger who drove by periodically; even the visitor’s center was closed.  Apparently, August is one of the hottest months to be in the desert with temperatures upward of 110°F, it was 115°F to be exact!  If you’re planning a trip to the Salton Sea or desert, definitely make sure you bring a lot of fluids with you especially if you’re going during the hotter months.

As I walked towards the water, I was greeted by piles and piles of dead dried out fish about 10 feet away from the water’s edge.  It was kind of a crazy sight to see and just goes to show just how hot it gets in the area.

salton-sea-4salton-sea-5salton-sea-6salton-sea-7salton-sea-8 salton-sea-9 Overall, I’m really happy to have finally made a trip out to the Salton Sea.  The views were incredible and absolutely breathtaking.  Along with the emptiness of the Salton Sean was a sense of peacefulness and serenity.  The Salton Sea is definitely worth enduring the heat for so check it out if you ever get a chance 🙂

Nassau Bahamas Vacation Getaway

So everyone is going on their summer vacations and I’m over here like, 3 more days of work until the weekend comes.  I love vacationing during non-peak seasons/months, it’s not as busy and I don’t have to deal with huge crowds, long wait times, or high hotel rates…what’s there not to love?  Oh yeah, the vacation FOMO you get when everyone is traveling and having fun on their summer vacations and you’re stuck at work.  If I can’t be on vacation, I can at least reminisce!  I have a bunch of vacation pictures that I haven’t posted from a few vacations so I’ve decided that I’m going to do a couple of posts on them 🙂

Here are some shots from my short trip to Nassau during my Bahamas birthday cruise several months ago.Nassau Bahamas

The blue waters and cute lighthouse reminds me of a postcard you’d get from your vacationing friend.  When I think of Nassau, this image always comes to mind.  If you’re ever in Nassau, you can find this spot by walking past Senior Frog’s towards the beach just beyond all the restaurants and buildings and before the brightly colored stands on the beach.

1_0851How often do you see bright crayon-colored buildings when you’re out and about?  Not often enough, I bet.  I love fun, festive things with lots of character!
1_0800You can’t go to a white sand beach and not write in the sand so here’s my obligatory sand drawing, sorry for the cheesiness!
Black Romper in NassauI love wearing rompers as opposed to swim cover-ups when I’m out at the beach.  Swim cover-ups often have a undergarment-y feel to them; most of the time they aren’t a stand alone piece and are sheer!  Rompers are extremely versatile, you can slip it off and hit the beach, then slip it back on and grab lunch or hit up some stores without looking like a tourist in your wet sheer swim cover-up at the souvenir shop.Clubmaster Sunnies in Nassau1_0728a1_0930

If you’re feeling stressed out or overwhelmed at work, you should definitely take a vacation.  Even if you can’t take the vacation right away, just the act of planning it and having that getaway to look forward to will put you in a slightly more positive mood.  Let’s face it, how can be made if you’re going to be going on vacation soon?

grand cayman vacation, what to pack

7 Mile Beach

7 Mile BeachThe Cayman Islands are most popular during the winter and spring months (December-April), the rainy season just ended, and temperatures are in the low to mid 80’s and it is just pure PERFECTION!  I went in May shortly after the high/peak season ended and the likelihood of rain increased.  Luckily for me, the weather was still amazing with the exception a few early morning showers and honestly it wasn’t even a big deal because the dark clouds disappeared and the hot sun came out almost immediately and dried up all the rain.  If you decided to sleep in late on one of the rainy mornings, you probably wouldn’t have even known that it had rained.  Weather is not the only thing that you should account for when deciding what to pack for your Grand Cayman vacation.  The Cayman dollar (KYD or as the islanders called it “CI”) is worth more than the US dollar (USD), ~ 4 CI = 5 USD, so what that means is that everything on the island is 2 levels more expensive than in the US(specifically, CA)…the 1st level is due to the island prices; everything is marked up to account for shipping costs.  Based on the prices I saw, it was about 30-50% more expensive(and that was before I realized that the the USD was worth less than CI/KYD!) so tack on the monetary conversion rate and everything was just way more expensive than i had anticipated, think amusement park prices but slightly more expensive.

Must Haves!

Sunblock – The sun is especially hot in Grand Cayman because it is closer to the equator and receives the highest intensity of sunlight; in other words, the sun’s rays are most focused on this area (I got the tannest I’ve ever been in my life in about 4 days, no need for tanning oils!). We picked up the only SPF 50 sunblock they at the gas station for ~15CI$(~$18.75USD), I’ve seen similar ones in CA for ~$8/9 USD.

My absolute favorite sunblock is Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration, this stuff is amazing!  It smells great(light pleasant tropical smell), is easily applied, not difficult to rub in, and best of all, it doesn’t leave you with that sticky sunblock feeling. It applies like a lotion and keeps your skin hydrated, I love love love this stuff!  It’s available in various level of SPF and also  has a version for your face!

  • Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration SPF 12 (buy here)
  • Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration SPF 30 (buy here)
  • Hawaiian Tropic’s Silk Hydration SPF 50 (buy here)

Sunburn opRelief Gel (Cooling) – It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re laying out on the beach or in the water and get sunburnt, so make sure you bring some sunburn relief gel with cooling effect.  You and all your sunburned friends/family will thank me for suggesting this when 1 of you gets sunburned like a lobster and you can feel the heat permeating from sunburns.  Most of the sunburn relief products contain “Lidocaine” which helps to numb the area and hence reduce pain.  If you’re a naturalist and don’t want any lidocaine in your gel, check out the next section on Aloe Vera.

  • Ocean Potion Burn Relief Ice Gel (buy here)

Sunglasses – Obvi!

Bathing Suit/ Swimwear – Obvi!

Bug Repellent – There were bugs and tiny mosquitoes everywhere, especially at night and in/by the water….as soon as the sun goes down, the bugs come out.  After getting BIT UP my 1st night whebug sprayn I went out to dinner, I made sure to spray myself in all the areas where my skin was exposed, rubbed it in, and washed my hands.  I went out to dinner thinking I was fully protected and those stealth little buggers bit up my hands/knuckles and the skin along my hairline!  They literally found the only areas that weren’t sprayed or covered and bit me up, WTF?!?  I have sensitive skin so I look for DEET-free options.

  • Gardencense All Organic Insect Deterrent (buy here)

Anti-Itch Cream – Definitely bring this because you WILL NEED IT!!  I forgot to pack any anti-itch cream so I went to the closest store and bought the only one they had left and that thing was like ~8 CI$(~$10 USD) for something I could’ve gotten in CA for under $7 USD!

Aloe Vera – This is the perfect option for those who are limited on space and don’t want to pack itch cream and sunburn relief products because aloe vera works for both!  Aloe Vera is also a good non-lidocaine option for my naturalists out there =)

  • ArtNaturals Aloe Vera Gel for Face, Hair & Body – Certified Organic 100% Pure & Cold Pressed (buy here)

Light/airy Long Pants – Probably one of the best way to protect your legs from the bugs at night is to cover them up.  It’s most likely still going to be very hot on the island so you’ll want something that is lightweight and airy.

Light and airy long-sleeve shirt or light jacket – Cover up to avoid bug bites on your arms, make that is lightweight and airy otherwise you’ll get too hot and uncomfortable because it is quite hot and humid.

Shawl, Sarong, Cover-Up, or Kimono – For my fashionistas out there, I got you! 😉 You basically just need to cover any exposed skin so you don’t get bit.  If you’re wearing insect repellent, you should be fine but I prefer to just cover my exposed skin with something temporary when I’m outdoors instead of covering myself with bug spray and getting it on my clothes, etc.

Snacks – If there are any snacks(pretzels, beef jerky, nuts, trail mix, cereal bars, dried fruit, etc) that you like to eat or might want to have, make sure that you bring it because snacks and groceries are expensive too!  We tried to save money on meals by going to the grocery store to buy a few snacks, water, basic sandwich making materials, etc…probably under 12 item and the total bill was something ridiculous and converted to ~$72 USD for what would’ve cost less than $40 USD in CA.

Nice to Haves!

Dry Snorkels – Have you ever gone snorkeling and got water in your snorkel?  It sucks!  Dry Snorkels will help eliminate that!  So you’re probably thinking, what is a dry snorkel?  It’s a snorkel with a mechaniscressim that lets a minimal/nowater into the snorkel even when you accidentally submerge the snorkel.  Grand Cayman and the Cayman Islands in general are known world-wide for it’s seemingly infinite water visibility.  The water is so calm that it feels like you are floating in pool.  You can snorkel less than 6 feet away from the water’s edge on 7 Mile Beach and see more fish
than you can see at Hanuma Bay in Hawaii.  You can rent snorkels on the island but who wants to have to use some janky snorkels that hundreds of others have put their mouths on?!?

  • Cressi Dry Snorkel – Snorkel Only (buy here)
  • Cressi Dry Snorkel Kit – Snorkel & Mask (buy here)
  • Cressi Dry Snorkel Kit – Snorkel, Mask, Fin, & Gear Bag (buy here)

Water Shoes – Most of the beaches west of George Town are very rocky so water shoes watershoesare a definite “nice to have” especially in Bodden Town.

7milebeachGrand Cayman is an expensive island but it is well worth it, simply go to 7 Mile Beach and you will see why.  Nothing beats 7 Mile’s pristine beaches with it’s powder fine white sands, calm clear waters, and coral reef filled with exotic fishes just steps from the water’s edge.  It is simply amazing, just thinking about it makes me feel more relaxed and at ease =)
